Mainframes Are Here to Stay
When you think about a mainframe, what do you picture in your head? For most people, the answer is a massive, archaic computer with an old-fashioned “green screen” terminal. Although you might think of mainframes as your mother’s—or even grandmother’s—technology, it is fair to paraphrase Mark Twain and simply say that the reports of the death of mainframe computers have been greatly exaggerated.
It’s true that the client-server model rose to prominence over the past 20 years and displaced mainframe computing in some ways, and now everything is moving to virtual servers and microservices hosted in the cloud. However, mainframes are still here. In fact, in some industries mainframes are still the dominant application, data and hardware platform that sits at the heart of the business.
